Congratulations to our 2015 Winners of Dickens Universe HS Essay Contest!

Congratulations to the winners of the Dickens Universe High School Essay competition!  Their work demonstrates a scholarly achievement which allows these NAI scholars to attend the Dickens Universe conference in Sanda Cruz, all expenses paid. 

This year’s winners and the working titles of their papers are:


Mary Ann Cabrales Blind Devotion:  Identity crises in devoted characters of Dickens’ Martin Chuzzlewit
examining how single-minded devotion (Tom, Pecksniff, Jonas) stunts the development of one’s identity
(Will be attending USC)

Belen Espinosa Plot Twists: The Brutal Artistry of Deception in Dickens’ Martin Chuzzlewit 
an examination of the brutality inherent in Tigg, Jonas and Scadder various “scams”
(Will be attending USC)

Alfa Lopez Does Steam Punk Humanity: The dichotomy of vice and virtue in Dickens’ Martin Chuzzlewit
focusing on the problematic “feebleness” of virtuous characters like Tom Pinch and Mark Tapley
(Will be attending University of Pennsylvania)


Maurissa Brown Criminal Minds: Pathetic fallacy and the psychological state of villains Dickens’ Martin Chuzzlewit
focusing on how and why Dickens uses this particular technique to explore psychological instability 
(Will be attending UCLA)
